China's Zijin Mining To Limit Gold Production

Following a leak of waste water into the Tingjiang river, Zijin Mining Group Company has announced that the local government in the accident area has ordered the company to curb its production at its Zijinshan gold plant.

The curb is aimed at reducing the impact of the company's operations on the environment and Zijin estimates that its gold output from the mine will be reduced by about 1 metric ton in 2010. In March 2010, the company had said that it aimed to produce 31.1 metric tons of gold in 2010.

Zijin, which is based in Fujian province, was blamed for waste water leakage and the resulting pollution of local waterways. In early July 2010 the company was forced to shut down its copper plant at Zijinshan following complaints from local water users and fish farms.
