Toshiba To Close Chinese Color TV Factory

Toshiba will close its color TV plant in Dalian at the end of December 2013, and its Dalian Toshiba TV Company will terminate operation at the same time.

Founded in July 1996, Toshiba's Dalian color TV factory mainly manufactured LCD TV products to supply the Japanese market. The closing of this factory will lead to the unemployment of about 900 employees.

Toshiba explained on its official website that the company hopes to further cut its fixed costs with the adjustment to the Chinese manufacturing base, aiming to achieve its goal of profitability in the second half of 2013.

Over recent years, Japanese home appliances brands like Toshiba have been facing a tough situation. In the international market, they were pressured by rising Chinese and South Korean home appliances makers; while in their domestic Japanese market, the competition among Japanese brands was also severe.

Though cutting business in the home appliances sector, Toshiba enhanced deployment in other sectors. In August 2013, the company teamed with the world's leading memory card maker SanDisk. With investments of about CNY25.2 billion, the two parties planned to build a cutting-edge semiconductor memory plant in Japan.
